数か月前、私たちは植物育種の世界における“生ける伝説”、
Dr. Ron Beatson をお迎えする機会に恵まれました。
「Dr. Ron」の愛称で知られる彼は、38年にわたりホップ育種の研究・開発に携わり、
Nectaron や Superdelic といった象徴的な品種を生み出してきました。
また、Nelson Sauvin、Motueka、Riwaka の開発においても、極めて重要な役割を果たしています。
この訪問には、私たちの親友である
@hudsonvalleybrewery、@rootandbranchbrewing、
そして @nzhopsltd の素晴らしい仲間たちも参加してくれました。
Testのビアガーデンでビールを片手に、Dr. Ronの知見を深く掘り下げながら、
私たちが最も魅了されているテーマのひとつ——
「ホップはどのようにしてフレーバーとアロマを生み出すために育種されるのか」
について語り合う、非常に刺激的な午後となりました。
そのセッションの締めくくりに、NZ Hopsの皆さんのご厚意で、
現在開発中の先進的なトライアルホップ NZH-109 を、
ごく少量提供していただけることになりました。
NZH-109 は現在も実験段階にあるホップですが、
すでにその表現力は高く評価されています。
タンジェリン、グレープフルーツ、ライムといったシトラス、
甘やかなパッションフルーツ、メロン、ピーチを思わせるストーンフルーツ、
さらに白ブドウのニュアンスに、ほのかなペッパースパイスとフローラルな余韻。
このビールは、ホリデーシーズンに私たちが飲みたい一本です。
NZH-109 on barley, wheat and oats
Several months ago, we were visited by living legend in the plant breeding world, Dr Ron Beatson. Dr Ron, as he’s known, has worked in hop breeding research and development for 38 years, famously creating iconic varieties like Nectaron and Superdelic, while playing an instrumental role in developing Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Riwaka.
During Dr. Ron’s visit, we were joined by our best friends from @hudsonvalleybrewery and @rootandbranchbrewing along with some of the good folks @nzhopsltd
We spent an enlightening afternoon in the beer garden at Test, picking Dr Ron’s brain over beers and exploring one of the subjects that fascinates us most: how hops are bred for flavor and aroma. By the end of our session, the folks at NZ Hops were kind enough to agree to send us a small amount of one of their advanced trial hops, NZH-109.
NZH-109, currently in its experimental phase, is developing a reputation for showcasing an array of citrus (think tangerine, grapefruit, lime), sweet passionfruit, melon, stone fruit (like peach), white grape, with subtle pepper spice and floral undertones.
This is the beer we’ll be drinking over the holidays.
